What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self?

Writer's picture: WILLIAM A SLOAN WILLIAM A SLOAN

So much. So little. Too much. Not enough.

I think this must be a popular interview question of the moment, or it’s the number one answer when you Google “What should I ask a celebrity over 50...or so?” Either way, I’ve seen it come up several times in the last few weeks and it got me to thinking the obvious thing – What advice WOULD I give my younger self?

It’s an interesting challenge. You should try it. Seriously. I mean, would you, say, warn your younger self against certain activities or experiences that were never a good idea...even though you enjoyed them and they were a collective rush and you learned some stuff from them, good and bad, and they helped make you more, shall we say, layered?

Would you go for the brownie points and tell your younger self that if they start each day with a smile and brush their teeth and polish their shoes and always say please and thank you, that they’ll be continually rewarded with gold stars and  promotions and financial security for being so gosh darn nice? And would you choke on that?

Or would you, perhaps, be brave enough to be honest and say to your younger self that you’re not like everybody else and you don’t fit in and there’s a good chance you never will but don’t ever give up on those differences because they’re what make you YOU. They’re what make you special and necessary and wondrous. You are the best you there is and you always will be. And there’s value in that. Always.

My personal heart-to-heart went well. And it was well worth it. So I ask you, What advice WOULD you give your younger self? Be thoughtful, be kind.........and be honest.

Dear Younger Self- Give up the cigarettes sooner, cut down on alcohol and stop sleeping with strangers!
