Some Things Never Change

So, this happened

A few decades ago, an agency I was a part of had a contract with a bold-face-name developer. We were hired to brand a certain property and create all of the support materials and media for that property. The project was a huge success and very well received. When it came time to be paid for the contracted work, our bold-face-name developer said that he would pay half and if we didn’t like it, we should sue, and good luck with that because he had a legal team that could tie us up in court and legal fees until we were all living in appliance boxes on the street.
Real Estate, as an industry, is not for the weak of heart. Then again, hypocritical, soulless clients are not for the weak of heart either...
But I digress. One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelou, when she said, ”When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.” And another of my favorite quotes is from Gertrude Stein, who said, “There is no there, there.”
So, this was a moment when the two quotes came together and this bold-face-name developer showed us who he was...............................and there was nothing there.
“You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes,
you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise!”
– Maya Angelou

Mwa ha ha! I remember this, and I have used it to illustrate a point on an occasion or two. I don't think I succeeded in removing the (superglued) wool from certain family members' eyes. But I keep trying.
